Denmark's cars in numbers: electric cars, age, makes and colours (November 2026)

In short

There are 2,974,168 registered passenger cars in Denmark. 741,146 of them are electric – 24.9%, or one in four. 57.2% run on petrol and 17.9% on diesel.

The average passenger car is 10.1 years old. Half of the cars are less than 8.8 years old.

The electric cars are the youngest

An electric car is on average 2.8 years old. A petrol car is 12.7 years and a diesel car 11.7 years. 498,972 passenger cars – just over one in six – are less than 3 years old.

At the other end, 198,130 passenger cars are more than 20 years old, and 71,050 are more than 30.

The makes

Volkswagen is the biggest make with 397,410 passenger cars, followed by Toyota (225,927), Peugeot (206,218), Skoda (199,814) and Ford (178,702).

The share of electric cars varies a lot: 31.7% of all Volkswagens and 31.3% of all Skodas are electric – but only 9.0% of all Toyotas and 8.8% of all Peugeots. Tesla has 101,059 cars in Denmark, all electric.

Among the five biggest makes, Skoda has the youngest cars (8.2 years on average) and Ford the oldest (12.4 years). Of makes with more than 20,000 cars, Chevrolet has the oldest: 21.5 years on average.

The colours

Grey is the most common colour: 34.5% of the cars that have a colour in the register. Then come black (24.1%), white (19.5%), blue (9.3%) and red (6.5%). Among electric cars, black is a little more common (27.1%) and red is rarer.

How we counted

The numbers come from our copy of the Danish Motor Register (DMR) – Motorstyrelsen's open extract of the register – downloaded on 2 November 2026. We count passenger cars with the status “Registered”, for all uses – including taxis and motorhomes. No information about owners is included.

Age is counted from the car's first registration date. Models are grouped by model name, so all versions count as one model – but Yaris Cross, Aygo X, C3 Aircross and Golf Sportsvan count separately. 27% of the cars have no colour in the register, so the colours are calculated from the cars that have one.

For comparison, Statistics Denmark counted 2,914,000 passenger cars on 1 January 2026, with an average age of 10.0 years.
