How to sell your car quickly — and at the right price

Price, photos, description and viewings: what actually moves a car from listing to sold.

Find the right price

Search for your own model on BilPorten and sort by price. Look at cars of the same year, mileage and specification — and note which ones have been reduced. Set your price a little above what you want, so there is room to negotiate, but not so high that the car disappears in the crowd.

Photos sell the car

Wash and vacuum the car. Photograph it in daylight without harsh sun, ideally somewhere with a plain background. Take at least: front three-quarter, rear three-quarter, both sides, the cabin from the front and the rear, the odometer, the tyres and the boot. Keep your fingers off the lens and the horizon straight.

Write an honest description

Start with what matters: year, mileage, engine, gearbox and specification. Mention servicing, new tyres, brakes and what comes with the car (winter tyres, roof bars). Mention the small blemishes too — it builds trust and saves you wasted viewings.

Answer enquiries quickly

Buyers usually write to several sellers. Whoever answers first, and with substance, gets the viewing. On BilPorten enquiries reach you by e-mail and in your inbox — and you can see whether the buyer is offering a part-exchange.

The viewing and the test drive

Meet the buyer in daylight at a public address or at your home. Photograph their driving licence before the test drive, and go along. Agree that the buyer covers any excess if the car is damaged during the drive.

Closing the sale

Put the sale in writing, take payment into your account (not cash, not a "cheque"), and re-register together in the Danish vehicle register before the buyer drives off. Don't deregister the car before it has been handed over — otherwise the buyer is driving without plates.
