What does it cost to own a car in Denmark? Road tax, insurance and servicing

Green ownership tax
It depends on the car's fuel consumption (km/l), or on CO₂ emissions for newer cars. A frugal small petrol car sits at the low end, an older diesel SUV at the high end. The amount is in the Danish vehicle register and in our licence plate lookup.
Insurance
Third-party insurance is required by law; comprehensive cover is optional but required with a car loan. The price depends on the car's value, your age, your address, your claims history and your annual mileage. Always get two or three quotes.
Servicing and wear
Budget for one service a year (DKK 1,500–4,000 depending on the make) plus tyres, brakes and small items. Premium makes, and cars over ten years old, usually cost more to keep up.
Depreciation
The biggest cost for most people — especially over the first three years. A car of three to five years has taken the steepest drop and is often the best buy measured in kroner per year.
