Bill of sale for a car – free template

What a bill of sale should contain when you buy or sell a used car – and a free template you can print and fill in.

Why put the sale in writing?

A bill of sale is your written agreement about the sale. With the price, the mileage and what you agreed on paper, there is no doubt afterwards about what you settled on. It is especially useful when two private people trade and there is no dealer to handle the paperwork.

The parties

Write down the name, address and phone number of both the seller and the buyer. The seller should be the person registered as the car's owner – if there is another name on the registration certificate, ask why before you pay.

The car

Make, model, year, registration number and VIN, so there is no doubt about which car it is. Also write down the mileage at handover and what comes with the car: winter wheels, a spare key, the service book.

Price and payment

The purchase price, how it is paid, and when. Pay by bank transfer when you are standing there with the car and the paperwork – never in advance. Look the car up in the Danish vehicle charges register at tinglysning.dk to see whether there is a charge on it. If there is, agree how it will be paid off before you pay.

The car's condition

Write down the faults and damage the seller has told you about, and when the car last had its inspection and service. If you have agreed that something will be fixed before the handover, write that down too.

Handover and change of ownership

Agree the day and time of the handover. The change of ownership is registered in the Danish vehicle register at motorregister.skat.dk with MitID, and the buyer must have the car insured from the handover.

Signatures

Make two copies and both sign them – one for the seller and one for the buyer. It is a good idea to take a photo of the signed bill of sale with your phone.

Before you sign

Look the car up with Licence plate check and check that the make, model and VIN match the registration certificate. Also read our advice on buying a car safely.
